Fifth for Atkins in Worcester Cyclocross event

Raleigh’s young cyclocross rider Joe Atkins picked up fifth place this weekend in the penultimate round of the Waldrons Solicitors West Midlands League at Top Barn Farm Worcester.

Riding in his Coventry Road Club colours on his Raleigh RX Race dutch orange cross bike, the largely flat course and dry conditions led to some fast exciting racing, which suited Atkins down to the ground.

With youth on his side he attacked with three others from the gun and the four soon established a good lead over the bunch.

Mid-way through the race Atkins and Pete Baham attacked the small group and got a gap but then Atkins slipped and fell, losing contact with the group.

Stuck in no-mans-land for the remainder of the race, Atkins came home in 53m 22s, holding off a fast finishing Steve Roben.
